It all started in a little spruce beer and ginger cake shop on the evening of May 10, 1817. Elam Genung and Harriot Reynolds saw a need for a group to meet for worship and prayer. They made arrangements for a meeting the very next day. They invited a group of friends to the shop for a prayer service. At its conclusion a Methodist class was organized and it prospered until a church was constructed and dedicated on June 20, 1817. All the Methodist churches in New Albany grew from this humble beginning.
A meeting held on May 11, 1817 was the first church meeting of record in New Albany, and Trinity Church grew out of this rich spiritual heritage. Trinity Church was formed in September, 1888 as a result of a similar meeting of official delegates from all the Methodist Churches existing in New Albany at that time. They concurred that there was a need for a Methodist church in upper New Albany. It was agreed that all Methodists living above the Seventh Street, not affiliated with Jenni DePauw Church, would be urged to join with the John Street congregation to form Trinity Methodist Episcopal Church. They would occupy a church to be built on the corner of Thirteenth and Spring Streets. The membership of the church was made up primarily from members of John Street, Centenary, and Wesley Chapel Churches; thus, the name Trinity. The cornerstone for the church was laid on July 10, 1889, but Trinity measures its beginning from September, 1888, when the people of Trinity Methodist Episcopal came together to worship and form a church family.
For seventy-one years, until 1959, the members of Trinity Methodist Episcopal continued to love, serve, and grow at this location. At this time, because of continued growth, the needs of the people, and the need for a new building, they formed a relocation committee. Property was purchased on Charlestown Road. Plans were instituted to build a new church to continue Trinity's ministries in the community. The first unit, Sunday School rooms and a Fellowship Hall were built and the congregation consecrated it to God on April 26, 1959. The Fellowship Hall served as a temporary sanctuary. As the needs of the church and the community continued to grow, the congregation saw the need for a permanent sanctuary. The new Sanctuary was completed and dedicated on November 26, 1972.
In 1997, additional construction started with the remodeling of the present educational unit and continued with plans to enlarge the educational opportunities at Trinity by adding class rooms, a Youth Center and a Social and Athletic Center.
Trinity United Methodist Church is a growing Church, spiritually, and numerically and in service to the community.
